Job description
The senior index manager in index maintenance manages a wide range of indices covering all capital markets – equities, fixed income, and commodities. The senior index manager is expected to analyse and implement complex index methodology and solve non-routine problems on an on-going basis with minimal support or direction. The senior index manager is responsible for all aspects of a group of indices

Accountabilities:

Manage and maintain relationships with clients.
• This particular position will have to work with a large amount of complex index models in Excel and Access.
• Preparing and calculating S&P Dow Jones branded and client custom indices. This includes performing analytical research on companies to determine the composition of the index, adjusting data in our calculation system, and adjusting the data to conform to the rules of the index.
• Must ensure timely and accurate delivery of real-time and end-of-day index data to clients and end users.
• Preparing and delivering announcements as they relate to index changes to clients and end users in advance of the implementation of the changes.
• Quantitative analyses of index returns, weights and constituents
• Manages and maintain relationships with key members of other groups within S&P Dow Jones Indices, across other S&P departments, particularly IT.
• Work with the technology group to further enhance our system capabilities by identifying deficiencies in our work flow and quality control processes
• Works with index development and technology to assure calculations are correct and timely.
• Must be able to manage multiple projects and deadlines. The projects involve; requirements gathering, analytical thinking, compilation of data, and documentation.
• Must be able to clearly communicate to a variety of both internal and external clients.
• Take a leading and subject matter expert role in coordination with the technology group and production support group to further enhance our system capabilities by identifying (and by working as part of a team to correct) deficiencies in our work flow and quality control processes.
• Participate in new product process – new product generation, working closely with the PMO.
• Must have the ability to train new and current employees on best-practices for index management.

Qualifications
• Strong Math background.
• Superior computer skills in Excel, Word and related applications. Access, VBA, SQL and Matlab preferred.
• Understanding of equity markets, commodities pricing, bond and derivatives calculations.
• Must be able to work independently on multiple projects with minimal direction or supervision.
• Bachelor’s Degree. Advanced degree in business, math, economics, or finance strongly preferred
• Must be able to demonstrate excellent analytical and quantitative capabilities to solve original, non-routine problems in a timely and insightful manner
• Ability to learn S&P’s proprietary index calculation engines.
• Understanding of global financial markets
• Ability to assume responsibility, work with others and manage projects
• Ability to learn new data and calculation platforms in a limited time
• Requires excellent written and verbal communication skills and the ability to coordinate work done by multiple people and / or groups.
• Experience dealing with customers in a time-sensitive demanding environment where interpretation of data has both objective and subjective components requiring persuasion and influencing skills.

• Senior Index Managers will be responsible for more high profile products and/or more complex indices. They will be required to interpret complex financial models in Excel & Access to support the calculation of custom indices.
• Our expectation is that the individual in this role will be a subject matter expert with regard to our proprietary systems, index mathematics and index maintenance controls and procedures. They will be a point of escalation for problems which index managers cannot fully resolve.
• S&P Dow Jones Indices Committees provide necessary governance to S&P Dow Jones branded indices. The Senior Index Manager must take all necessary action to ensure that members of the Committees have necessary information and analysis to understand and take on the maintenance of the indices being developed. This work requires that the Senior Index Manager coordinate with teams and groups outside of direct reporting lines and influence their priorities ensuring necessary quality of work.
• The Senior Index Manager must design and implement quality checks to validate data and ensure accurate end of day files are produced and delivered in a timely manner..
• The Senior Index Manager must make timely decisions about application of corporate actions in assigned indices and understand how that treatment will impact other global indices, communicating with external and internal customers frequently. The Senior Index Manager serves as a primary contact point for customers of S&P Dow Jones indices and is expected to make decisions within authority or expertise and elevate other decisions by collaborating with their Team Leader, the Regional Production Leader, and at times the Chairman of the Index Committee.
• Process checks and value checks often bring out inconsistencies. The Senior Index Manager must be able to troubleshoot to determine whether input data used in the calculation was correct, and whether calculated values are correct, and, if not, must understand the best way to correct the error. The risk which must be managed by the Senior Index Manager is extremely great. The ramifications of a client-facing error in this market space may result in both lost business and reputational impact.
