Job Description:
The Director of Legal & Business Affairs will apply legal expertise, commercial awareness and forward-looking perspective to structure production, co-production and commissioning agreements to the maximum benefit of Disney Channel EMEA. The individual will work closely with the VP of Global Original Programming for Disney Channels Worldwide and the Vice President of Programming and Development for Playhouse Disney. Responsible for assisting Channel Management in structuring and coordinating acquisitions and co-productions and driving accurate and efficient processes and procedures to protect the business at all times while providing a value-for-money service.
Key Tasks/Objectives
Legal / Business Advisor, assisting Principal Counsel, Business & Legal Affairs on negotiations of Disney Channel productions and co-productions
Development of appropriate deal terms to apply throughout EMEA and liaise with Disney Channels worldwide
Acquisitions Advisor assisting in the formulation drafting and negotiation of product acquisitions
EU Law Development Monitor
UK Government Law Development Monitor
Industry/Technical Advancement Monitor
Coordinates Business and Legal Affairs activities within the territory cluster in line with agreed service delivery levels
Supports Channel management teams in structuring 3rd party acquisition deals and co-productions in a way that maintains and enhances the content portfolio, at all times protecting the business
Fosters a ‘continuous improvement’ culture within the team, ensuring processes, policies and procedures sufficiently protect the business from current and future risk, while reducing the cost of service provision where possible
Strengthens internal and external relationships in ways that benefit the business
Drives enhancement of own and others’ awareness of commercial and policy developments, in an international arena, and the impact of these on the business
Develops direct reports through provision of constructive appraisals, guidance and on-the-job coaching.
Qualifications / Experience
Qualified Lawyer
Substantial PQE (preferably both private practice and in-house) within television programme production (both live action and animated) and acquisitions and intellectual property
Demonstrable working knowledge of EC regulatory issues e.g. relating to copyright matters and directives affecting programme production
Significant proven background knowledge and experience of EC quotas and tax incentives/treaties
Proven team management/ leadership experience
Contract, Commercial and Intellectual Property Law
Television production and broadcast industry experience
