Director - Legal - United International Pictures - London


Job description
The Director of Legal is primarily responsible for legal matters relating to UIP’s theatrical and non-theatrical film distribution business; and also for other legal aspects of UIP’s subsidiaries’ activities in particular in the areas of employment, corporate and property related matters. The Director of Legal reports dually; operationally to UIP’s Chief Operating Officer and functionally to the international legal executives of UIP’s Partners, Paramount Pictures and Universal Pictures. The role requires a pragmatic approach in providing general legal advice and counsel to senior executives on a wide range of issues; working across diverse areas and multiple projects to ensure UIP’s interests are maintained in a fast paced, demanding business environment. The position is located in West London, some international travel may be required. Duties include:

Advise on legal and commercial considerations impacting on the theatrical business primarily on dealings with exhibitors.
Negotiate, draft and implement agreements for the distribution of product supplied by UIP’s Partners; and the product acquired from third parties.
Approve commercial contracts with media agencies, backroom providers and other major suppliers before execution by UIP’s subsidiaries.
Manage all litigation and anti-trust matters; coordinating local counsel advice and reporting to Partner’s legal executives.
Work closely with the other corporate functions provided by the London office to UIP’s subsidiaries in particular Human Resources on employment matters, Compliance and Tax, to protect UIP’s position in our business arrangements.
Supervise the drafting and implementation of agreements for UIP’s non-theatrical distribution business for digital and analogue exhibition of UIP films by third parties in hotels, hospitals, buses etc.
Liaise with the MPAA on industry issues.
Monitor worldwide IP registrations.

Desired Skills and Experience
Basic Qualifications
Qualified Solicitor in England and Wales.
Significant relevant experience at a law firm practising media law or other in-house experience, or a combination of both, preferably in the entertainment industry.
Fluency in another language especially Spanish would be an advantage.
