Job Description
The successful candidate will define and conduct ongoing research and analysis across multiple database and data management technology focus areas and will have end-user operational and implementation experience in most of these areas: data warehouse development; database architecture; data modeling; data and information integration; database management system evaluation and selection. Specifically the successful candidate will have experience in the following areas:
Data Warehousing Development Lifecycle
Data Warehouse/Business Intelligence metadata management
Business Rule Implementation
Test data management
Version management
Database migration (from an old version to a new version of the same database, and from one vendor’s database to another – such as SQL Server to Oracle)
Database operations (running the database servers efficiently in terms of personnel (DBAs), licensing, and storage).
Data Ingestion
Data modeling
Data archive
The candidate should also be able to provide secondary coverage of:
Cloud-based databases and LDWs (Google, AWS, Microsoft)
Open source databases
Leading database management and data warehousing tools (Oracle, IBM, Microsoft, Teradata, Pivotal, etc)
Sybase, Ingres, Informix (second tier) expertise
IBM database expertise
On-Line Transaction Processing (OLTP)
Transactional and operational database systems including emerging database technologies like in-memory computing databases.
The research methodology includes networking with clients, vendors and analysts; researching, evaluating and analyzing information; and participating in Research Meetings and other activities which comprise the Gartner research process.
The candidate will actively contribute to Gartner’s research positions and catalyze technology adoption and enhancements which advance the information technology discipline.
Job responsibilities include creating in-depth research reports (averaging 25 pages in length), answering telephone and email inquiries from clients, serving as subject matter expert on sales opportunities, creating and delivering presentations at Gartner conferences, collaborating on the Data Management Strategies and cross-research group agendas, and providing individualized consulting for clients.
10+ years experience working within the data management and database technology field
Bachelor's degree in related field; Masters desirable
Significant applicable experience to be knowledgeable about a particular market or industry and to be accepted by clients as an expert or "guru". The IT knowledge needed typically entails an in-depth understanding of the technology as well as the industry and the market of IT solutions, vendors, products and user strategies in specific area(s) of industry.
Experience running a technology department for a user or as a product manager for a vendor, or as a consultant with in depth knowledge of a specific technology
Strong communicator who is able to explain complex concepts both concisely and simply
Credibility to represent Gartner research methodology and strategies effectively at a senior level
Other key desirable qualities include being collaborative, creative, and willing to learn
20-25% travel is expected
