The University of Cambridge is seeking to appoint a Director of Research in the field of Big Data Technologies to lead and develop a leading independent research programme in this area.
Cambridge Big Data (CBD) is one of the University's Strategic Initiatives. It is an activity which spans all of the schools within the University and includes activities relating to the theoretical underpinnings of data science, the technologies required for Big Data, together with research into the legal, ethical and policy aspects of Big Data. Additionally the initiative has a research theme on the social and economic impacts of Big Data. Current research activities are broad, but of particular relevance to this role include the mathematics and computer science associated with new algorithms (closely linked to the Alan Turing Institute), research into new technologies for Big Data including energy efficient computing with emphasis on the challenges of bio-medical data and massive data volumes as exemplified by the Square Kilometre Array.
The post holder will conduct and lead research in the array of technologies for Big Data and with clear reference to new algorithms and software systems. The post holder will in particular lead research in the field of data management including storage systems and distributed file and object stores and how these relate to the Big Data challenge. The post holder will work with other leading researchers in the University to build a world-leading research activity in this area and help win grants to build this broad activity. While the post will be associated with the Department of Physics, the post holder will be expected to engage with research across all of the Schools within the University in the spirit of the CBD Strategic Research initiative.
Applicants should have a PhD in Mathematics, Engineering, Computer Science or another relevant scientific discipline. Proven track record of conducting and leading independent research in a University environment. They should also have a proven track record of research and development of novel technologies in the field of data management and distributed data within industry.
