Job Description
The Risk and Compliance function support the rest of the British Business Bank (BBB) through independent and objective challenge to ensure that the business has an effective control framework and operates according to its Risk Appetite. The Financial Risk Director will support the Chief Risk & Compliance Officer in managing risk activities across the organisation, with particular focus on the specific risks to the BBB’s debt and equity programmes.
Main Responsibilities
The key aspects of the role will involve (but not limited to):
Set Group Credit policy and Credit Risk Framework for both debt and equity investments and review procedures.
Foster a collaborative working relationship with the 1st line of defence product teams
Lead the effort on continuous measuring and monitoring of credit and investment risks across all BBB units, by facilitating collation of all information from departments responsible and BBB Risk & Compliance team and follow up exceptions.
Manage portfolio monitoring and support development, implementation and maintenance of key monitoring and reporting tools as they relate to credit and investment risks.
Coordinate day-to-day interactions between Risk & Compliance, the Product teams and external parties, providing high quality analysis, challenge and advice as required, including on risk strategy
Review debt and equity investment proposals against Risk Appetite and provide feedback on due diligence reports and audits
Advise and consult on strategy and ultimately developing the credit risk appetite for the BBB business in the context of the overall risk appetite of the bank.
Support the creation of models and methodologies to determine and lead the assessment of the adequacy and appropriateness of provisioning framework for credit losses across all portfolios. Broaden and clearly define the credit risk framework of the bank
Desired Skills and Experience
Person Specification
(Qualifications, skills and competencies required for role)
A good understanding of solutions and products related to debt and equity investments.
A deep understanding of the UK venture capital industry, SME lenders and of the different industrial sectors supported by private finance. Previous buy side experience with equity funds ideal.
A working knowledge of UK and European Securities regulation and the ability to provide a practical interpretation of regulations in the context of the firm’s business activities.
Strong interpersonal skills that will allow them to build and maintain effective working relationships both within the Risk & Compliance function, but also across BBB’s businesses.
A thorough understanding of financial analysis, debt and equity valuations, risk concepts/frameworks with a special focus on unlisted and illiquid equities, and SME debt including the relevant standards, techniques and tools
