This key role is responsible for drafting and negotiating a wide variety of complex deals including acquisitions, co-productions and co-developments across several different territories throughout the world, as well as providing more general legal advice and support to Focus’ production and acquisition teams. The role will work closely with the other members of the Legal and Business Affairs team, which is led by the SVP, Legal & Business Affairs.
Watch: Career Advice Qualifications/Requirements • Drafting and negotiating a wide range of agreements as required by Focus’ international production and acquisitions business, including option purchase agreements, co-development agreements, acquisition/co-financing and co-production agreements, key production agreements, interparty agreements and security documents
• Keeping the department’s existing set of legal templates up to date, including long and short form acquisition agreements, deal memos, and co-development agreements.
• Responsibility for reviewing and approving chain of title documents and drafting related documents where necessary, such as chain of title attestations and affidavits
• Managing the legal delivery process (which involves working closely with junior members of the Legal & Business Affairs team)
• Ensuring all compliance procedures are correctly followed and dealing with any anti-piracy issues that come up
• Undertaking legal research where necessary, for example on specific aspects of national and international copyright law and intellectual property law
• Maintaining strong working relationships with local territory managing directors, theatrical distribution, home video and television divisions, marketing and senior management across the international business, and supporting their strategic business development plans
• Working in collaboration with other legal teams across NBCUniversal businesses
• Identifying legal and industry developments which require guidelines and education for the business
• Instructing and working with outside counsel where required
SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE
• Qualified solicitor (England and Wales, U.S., or other jurisdiction) with 5+ years PQE
• Extensive experience of film rights & content acquisition, preferably either with a film distribution company or a film/media team within a law firm
• Excellent attention to detail
• Excellent written and spoken English and excellent drafting skills
• Ability to work in a fast-paced, changing environment with a diverse and often heavy workload
• Additional languages (French, German and/or Spanish) are highly desired but not essential
