Ad Director - Top Gear - Immediate Media - London


Job description
OVERALL JOB PURPOSES

To lead, motivate and co-ordinate all aspects of display, insert advertorial, classified, online and emerging digital platform sales across the Top Gear brand. To contribute to, and have ultimate management responsibility for the contribution of the ad sales effort for the Top Gear brand across all revenue streams. To create bespoke solutions and drive advertorial business on Top Gear whilst also taking an active part in display, digital and ultimately delivering cross platform partnerships. This is an extremely high profile role within Immediate Media and externally and requires extra work and travel outside normal working hours and attendance of appropriate media events on behalf of Immediate Media.
BBC Top Gear magazine is the world’s most published car magazine, has double the readership of its nearest competitor and is also the most read men’s magazine in the UK. In addition, the magazine, as with the TV Show, Web-site, Global Live Tour, Merchandise etc is growing around the world at a staggering rate and is currently one of the most exciting brands to work on in the UK.
We have also just launched our interactive iPad edition and are about to re-launch the magazine with a completely new look.
BBC Top Gear Magazine is owned by BBC Worldwide and produced on its behalf by Immediate Media Company Limited. This position will require someone who can comfortably manage relationships at a high level.

ACCOUNTABILITIES
Manage the sales team across Digital (including iPad & App), Display and Creative Solutions.
Devise and implement ad sales strategy to ensure maximum ad revenue generation across the title and its revenue streams.
Set revenue and expenditure budgets for each area as well as develop and implement annual business plans for ad sales across the brand.
Submit regular forecasts of financial performance across all ad revenue streams to the Commercial Director and Publisher at Immediate Media and the Publishing Director, BBC Worldwide
Ensure that all ad department expenditure and running costs are kept within agreed budgets, and that all hospitality and expenses expenditure is spent in an appropriate manner to enhance business success.
Motivate and actively lead the ad sales effort to raise the profile of the brand within its market and also raise the profile externally, in order to establish and develop successful business relationships with senior client and agency contacts across all competencies.
Encourage appropriate use of portfolio sell to encompass all cross media activities available to the brand, and in some cases the wider Immediate Media portfolio.
Ultimate responsibility for recruitment, selection and training of ad team, ensuring that comprehensive staff development and training plans are in place and executed.
Set quality performance standards for all reporting staff and ensure these are adhered to at all times through effective, regular performance measurement and reviews.
Set objectives for the brand and all reporting managers to ensure annual business plans and budget targets are achieved for each revenue stream.
Ultimate responsibility for the smooth running of all administrative and sales systems for the brand and that all records are secure, up to date and accurate as far as possible.
Take pivotal role within the senior ad team representing Immediate Media to ensure all potential business opportunities are maximised for the benefit of both the Top Gear brand and the wider Immediate Media portfolio.
Appraise all reporting managers across the Top Gear brand in accordance with our guidelines
Ensure the highest standard of communication between all internal Immediate Media departments.
Initiate and attend appropriate department management meetings and attend where necessary other internal management meetings within both Top Gear and Immediate Media.
Report regularly with regards progress to Commercial Director and Publisher at Immediate Media and the Publishing Director, BBC Worldwide

COMPETENCIES

Technical competencies:

A track record of successfully selling advertising to West End agencies and major companies at the highest level, across digital and print.
Senior ad sales management experience in either magazines or national press
An interest in motoring and the lifestyle genre
Excellent analytical skills and ability to think both strategically and laterally to drive value for the brand
Proven track record of success managing ad sales teams in competitive marketplace
Excellent business and numeracy skills.
Extensive magazine and online market place knowledge.
Extensive contacts in ad agencies and clients across all relevant areas including investment, planning, digital and client direct.
Excellent sales, negotiation and presentation skills and experience of all at the highest levels to agencies and clients
Extensive experience of commercial flair, marketing and media industry knowledge
Superb communication skills
