Job description
Reporting to the DePuy Synthes Leader of Engineering, Science & Technology (EST), the Director of ETS, Joints/BioMaterials is responsible for leading and directing all engineering & technology activities across various GO franchise/business units for the Joints Business Unit (i.e. Blackpool, Cork, Raynham and Warsaw). To support global innovation, leverage and standardization these roles will also take additional WW leadership for a defined platform or technology area.


This critical role will be accountable for the engineering/technology strategy and execution. This senior engineering leader will lead a team with accountability to improve process reliability and quality while significantly reducing process variability and cost.



The leader will possess a strong strategic vision and a willingness to be hands-on in all aspects of global manufacturing and supply chain operations as appropriate. This position will be part of the WW Engineering Leadership Team responsible for driving global standardization across the organization.



In this role, the Director of ETS, Joints/BioMaterials will develop an integrated capability to leverage talent and best practices in Engineering, Science & Technology. Key areas of focus will include

Talent development and leverage

Innovation management

Program management for quality, service growth & value improvement projects

Strategic deployment of “technology roadmaps”

Technology transfer for new products, base business product management, BCP and Network Optimization.

Directing the design, development, validation and transfer of manufacturing processes & technologies.

Leadership for defined global platform Virtual teams



The role requires the development of a strong partnership and heavy interface to Production, R&D, Quality, Regulatory, Facilities Management and Product Management organizations. At this level, the position has a direct contribution to the development of business and/or functional strategies and typically, responsibility for growth of the MAKE organization.

Work closely with the franchise engineering organization to ensure constant collaboration

Talent

Create an environment where engineering leadership and talent development are a priority. Develop a culture of fast paced innovation and foster an environment where peoples potential can be realized. Responsible for all technical talent development (directly or indirectly reporting). Ensure cross cluster leveraging of talent and solutions. Strategy

Develop the engineering & technology strategy in support of the global vision. Develop technology roadmaps and continually evaluate new innovative processes, systems and methods to drive a competitive advantage. Champion an E2E physiology consistent with the short and long term goals of the company. Steers collaboration with internal and external partners to remove barriers, clarify roles and responsibilities, and coordinate and execute project plans. Responsible for deciding the kind and extent of technologies and related programs needed to accomplish business objectives and for choosing the scientific/engineering approaches

Innovation Management

Develop and manage expense and capital budgets per our strategic plans and forecasts. Manage the Mfg Engineering portfolio management process and system in accordance with MD/J&J standards. Provide leadership on the innovation process and ensure a 5 year pipeline of projects exist to meet the strategic needs of the business. Anticipate and influence the technology requirements to meet future customers’ needs. Foster both internal and external collaboration to maximize innovation output. Ensures Innovation scope includes compliance and quality improvement, capacity increase, launch preparation, cost reduction, cycle time reduction and raw material qualification. Establishes technology lifecycle strategies including obsolescence and re-capitalization

Process

Strengthen technology transfer process to ensure robust processes working closely with R&D and Product Management engineering groups. Design and implement processes that provide for a high level of internal customer satisfaction. Drive best practices in engineering design and automation. Evaluate and implement improved Manufacturing Engineering performance, management, and tracking methods to monitor and control costs that will allow the company to complete projects on time and under budget. Established common technical standards, software systems and capital equipment to be utilized. As appropriate, align with GO, MD and J&J standards.

Job Function

Engineering (Generalist)

This position requires a minimum of an undergraduate degree with10+ years of experience in Manufacturing or Manufacturing Engineering in the medical device or regulated industry. Minimum of 8+ years of managerial experience is also required.

Outstanding leadership capability required along with the ability to develop individuals within an organization – demonstrated ability to motivate and inspire a newly formed global engineering team to drive significantly increased performance through technical innovation, business process innovation and change.

Change management is required along with project skills, with the ability to work effectively and drive alignment in a global environment through strong communication and empowerment.

Deep understanding of the process excellence tool set (LEAN, Six Sigma) with a proven track record of deploying these tools to improve operational performance is required.

Must demonstrate working knowledge of process development and validation, including design of experiments, statistical analysis.

Knowledge of orthopedic joints products preferred.



This position requires approximately 25% domestic and international travel.
