Job Description

Context and purpose

This role provides strategic and architectural leadership for the area of Transport in order to deliver the required capability to meet Three`s Company Plan. The position holder will be defining and managing the strategic and architectural direction of the Transport Domain for H3G UK whilst liaising with a wide range of internal and external stakeholders.

This role requires a senior strategist/architect with the ability to engage and influence key business stakeholders, quickly understand the strategic landscape, and to develop and lead the Transport strategy required to satisfy those requirements.

Scope

This role is responsible fordelivering the business outcome of improved network perception for our customers whilst keeping costs at an optimal level. This will be achieved through thestrategic and architectural planning of the IP network. Some of the key role outcomes are:

Ensuring that network architecture supports capacity and performance targets
Innovative and cost effective solutions
Influencing strategic partners as well as internal stakeholders
Budget preparation

The success of the role is measured by network capacity & performance metrics, innovative solutions and financial targets.

You will work closely with other domains in the Network and ICT depts., provide direction to the Transport design team, and get involved into cross-functional initiatives. The annual CAPEX budget is in the order of £ 10 m p.a.

The role has no direct reports but contract resources will be used as required

Responsibilities

Translate the Company objectives into a Transport strategy and architecture for both Core as well as Access areas.
Provide transport technology expertise and steer to business as well as to design teams
Work with internal technical expert organisations as well as third parties to deliver transport strategy & architecture
Responsible for transport Roadmap and budget definition
Lead or participate in RFIs/RFQs
Develop supplier relationships
Conduct and deliver studies to drive substantial reduction in the capital and operational expenditure of the transport network to better exploit existing hardware on the ground while tuning the technology environment for optimal performance, business continuity of high revenue services and improved customer satisfaction.
Monitor emerging technologies and industry developments such as next generation networks, to formulate H3G strategy and architecture for area
Review network supplier(s) roadmap, influence product line developments as and when required in a timely manner to address 3UK`sfuture network requirements.
Subject matter expert and technical authority for transport within the 3UK OpCo

Desired Skills & Experience

Must Have experience:
Ability to define target transport architecture and strategy for a large scale mobile network.
Extensive past experience in transport network design.
Contribute towards business case development.
Working knowledge of transport such as DWDM/OTN, Metro Ethernet, ATM/SDH and synchronisation technologies and awareness of current standards, activities and industry developments in the area.
Experience with either mobile or fixed wire Ethernet backhaul or aggregation networks.
Good appreciation and understanding of IP/MPLS principles.
Analytical capabilities and business acumen.
Vendor management skills and experience.
Ability to influence senior internal and external stakeholders.

Nice to Have:
Familiar with contract negotiation & management.
Knowledge of Microwave transmission technology.
Knowledge of LTE transport.
Engagement with OFCOM.
Educated to degree level
Ideally degree qualified in a Telecommunications discipline.
Working knowledge of IP networks.
Knowledge of 3G UTRAN and 3G Core Network architectures, together with an understanding of 3GPP roadmap and impacts on transport technologies.
