Job Description


Job Purpose – Summary

The Business Director provides leadership on their accounts, inspiring the highest standards in all team members whilst directing the Agency’s longer term relationship with the Client. The Business Director acts as a partner in developing marketing strategy, adding value to the Client’s business and is the Client’s first point of contact on strategic, creative and resource.

Key Responsibilities & Accountabilities
Knowledge Areas:
The Business Director is responsible for driving strategy, creating momentum at a European level and proactively leading the account.
Should have a good understanding of the role of advertising within the broader business context to aid the development of the Agency’s relationship with the Client from advertising supplier to marketing partner. Skills should include a knowledge of how key business are structured internally, understanding company reports, key business theories and an awareness of day to day business news
Has a thorough understanding of all dynamics operating in the market and the consumers relationship with the brand
Responsible for developing a deep understanding of the Client’s brands and for the effective stewardship of those brands in the short and long term.
In partnership with the Planning, applies innovative thinking to the development of insightful communication strategies, a longer term brand vision and outstanding creative briefs.
Should have a good cross-discipline understanding, ie. an up-to-date grasp of planning and media tools, print and production techniques, and below-the-line communication channels including PR, Sales Promotion, Direct Marketing, Sponsorship and Interactive
Provides advice, support and trouble shooting where necessary to ensure all projects are competed to the highest standards, on brief, on budget and on time
To be recognised as an expert by all client contacts
Deliver clear and consistent messages that are persuasive, demonstrating excellent influencing skills to improve the business.

Tasks Areas:
Involves sister companies as appropriate to provide 360ยบ solutions to Client’s business. In doing so is responsible for effective teamworking, acting as a facilitator for communication and cooperation between team members
Represents and merchandises the Client’s business within the Agency
Complete responsibility for the management of his/her group of accounts, setting the long term vision for the business, managing the Client needs and expectations at the most senior level, seeking opportunities to engage in broader business dialogue with Clients
Is responsible for the quality of the Agency’s relationship with each Client; he/she should forge strong links at the senior Client level based on mutual trust and respect. These should form the basis of a long term partnership with the Client.
Regularly seeks out ways to add value to the Client/Agency relationship (eg. Joint speaking appearances at conferences, effecting introductions to other members of Agency management, Agency presentations on broader industry issues)
The Business Director is expected to take an active lead in new business pitches, from initial preparation to final presentation
Is expected to make a contribution to the Agency as a whole, for example through training and recruitment, special projects, seminars, speaking engagements etc.
Prepares Business Plans which define the needs of the accounts including business development opportunities and resource needs agreed with Department Heads.
Ensures the Agency allocates sufficient and appropriate resource to complete tasks effectively
Oversees and provides support to the Account Manager so that all projects are completed to the highest standards, on brief, on budget and on time

Team Management & internal relationships:
Is honest, respectful and professional in dealing with members of their team, coaching and motivating them to deliver their best, taking responsibility for their career development including the regular completion of performance appraisals where appropriate
Responsibility for the management of those who report directly into them, their overall performance and career progression. Specific tasks include the setting of clear objectives, delegation, coaching, feedback and the completion of appraisals. The successful development of staff will be considered a vital element in assessing the performance of a Business Director
Leads the Account Team to develop positive and constructive relationships with other departments. Has the trust and respect of all members of their Agency team

To maximise the effective deployment of resource within the agency

Client Management:
Builds the trust of key Clients, giving them the confidence to buy brave ideas.
Deep understanding of challenges facing the Clients business in the short to mid-term
To help the client break through any organisational barriers
To represent the Agency at all times within the Client organisation and it’s suppliers and to be mindful of the Agency’s best interests
To engage Client stakeholders to help achieve Client objectives
Ensures Client understands the creative development and production process, negotiating sufficient time and budget for the Agency to deliver its best work

Financial Management:
Ultimate responsibility for the long term profitability of the account: negotiates fees, controls costs, maximises revenue and seeks new income opportunity
To own the P&L of your team – from timely and accurate forecasting to profitability on a job by job basis.
To develop newly formed ‘interactive’ relationships securing additional projects and therefore revenues.
Contributes to good financial management of the business; improving profitability and maximising revenue wherever possible; monitoring all billing procedures carried out by AM/AE, contributes to business/resource planning process, alerting management to any likely changes in billing/income, any potential write-offs etc.

Creative Management:
In conjunction with the Creative Director, the Business Director is ultimately responsible for the quality of the creative work on his/her Clients and for motivating members of the team to achieve the highest creative standards
Must understand how to inspire and manage the Creative department as well as having the ability to recognise great advertising ideas
Works with Account Team to devise the best way to sell creative work through the Client – and then does so with total conviction.
To lead the account within a constructive and creative operating environment.
To ensure your team delivers high quality agency’s product
Actively seeks to inspire creative team from the outset through innovative briefing techniques, providing an overall vision and direction for the creative work, ensuring it is set in the correct business context
Ensure Creative teams remain motivated and enthused from the moment of briefing to the final stages of production
Assumes responsibility for the quality of creative ideas that are presented to the Client. Is therefore also responsible for alerting Creative Director/Managing Partner if internal or Client issues are threatening the quality of the work
Is an excellent judge of creative work, willing and able to fight for the best work in any Client/Agency forum
Builds the trust of key clients, giving them the confidence to buy brave ideas
Gives serious consideration to the best way to sell creative work through the Client – and then does so with total conviction.
Works closely with Media Planner to produce inspiring and unusual media strategies that offer the most effective use of Clients media budget and provide a showcase for the agency’s creative work


Desired Skills & Experience

Professional, technical skills and previous experience required

Account handling experience working in an agency, in particular Account Management.
At least 1.5 year’s experience at BD level.
Experience of BTL, CRM and introducing Digital in to client briefs.
Experience of Global clients.
Previous line management experience of a team.
Experience of preparing and delivering presentations / proposals of a strategic nature.

Desired Experience:
Will have managed and run CRM and digital projects from strategy to implementation. Will have a good understanding of measurement techniques, and be able to use this knowledge to develop successful test and learn strategies.
Although CRM and customer Engagement experience is essential, experience is also desired in digital, social and cross discipline. They will need to apply past experience to new areas of communication.

Will need to have strong strategic thinking, possessing energy and creativity. Applying fresh thinking and new approaches to meet Client's expectations.
Will need to develop and demonstrate real leadership qualities and an evident mastery of the full raft of account management skills.
The BD leadership role on their business should also contribute to the department in a positive manner: by setting an example of best-practise account management skills.
The BD will need to be a strong team worker. Possessing great people management skills.
Will have strong project management skills. With a strong strategic ability for scoping and planning projects.
Identifying alternatives, options and different ways of looking at issues and problems. Must be cool under time pressures.
Is expected to build excellent relationships with clients - extending into social situations - and with all members of the agency team for whom they are responsible.
Clear evidence of business development skills and negotiation skills.
Good financial management, improving profitability and maximising revenue when possible.
Strong written and presentation skills.
