Director - Legal - EMEA - Rocket Fuel - London


Job description
Rocket Fuel is seeking a senior attorney to join its legal team as the Director of Legal for the Europe, Middle East, and Africa (EMEA) region. The position will be located in London, United Kingdom, although alternate European locations will be considered for the right candidate. The position will report to Rocket Fuel’s General Counsel, Chief Privacy Officer.

We are looking for a seasoned lawyer with a demonstrated ability to become a key business partner to the EMEA business leadership team and also the regional legal expert for the EMEA region. The attorney will be expected to coordinate outside legal resources and provide timely and sound legal and business advice and guidance to the regional management team, including country managers in Stockholm, Madrid, Milan, Paris, Hamburg and London. The attorney must be able to manage and follow through on numerous projects covering many different areas simultaneously. Role will include regular travel within Europe and visits to our US headquarters or other corporate offices.

The ideal candidate will have broad based experience supporting European operations for multi-national companies and be adept at managing risk and providing practical and sound legal advice to the business. The ideal candidate will also have a working knowledge of corporate law, transactions, employment law in one or more jurisdictions, data protection and consumer privacy in the European Union, and intellectual property law. Experience working with advertising technology companies, ad agencies, or other participants in the digital advertising ecosystem is a plus.

Responsibilities
Acting as the legal business partner to Rocket Fuel’s European management team and being the primary point of contact for general legal advice.
Supporting geographic expansion in the EMEA region, including conducting review and analysis of regulations that apply to Rocket Fuel’s business in new territories.
Providing corporate support, including overseeing the establishment of new subsidiaries and the maintenance of existing subsidiaries, including annual filings and reports, and managing related real estate matters for regional offices, working closely with Rocket Fuel’s facilities team.
Supporting commercial transactions.
Participating in the design and implementation of company policies and processes to ensure legal compliance with applicable laws and regulations in EMEA, including competition law, privacy and data protection law and anti-corruption (including FCPA and UK Bribery Act) matters, and working closely with legal and human resources teams to manage compliance and ensure consistency in the application of global company policies.
Working closely with Rocket Fuel’s people team and internal and external employment counsel on employment law related matters.
Providing support on dispute resolution, litigation, intellectual property, M&A activity, and international corporate matters.
Managing outside counsel across EMEA.
Working closely with the General Counsel and Rocket Fuel’s growing legal team to build a world class legal organization dedicated to superior service and performance.

Qualifications:
Base Qualifications
Candidates should have a professional qualification as a solicitor / lawyer and be licensed to practice law in the UK or any of the following EU jurisdictions – France, Germany, Italy, Spain.
Strong academic background.
Minimum of 12 years law firm and in-house experience, preferably with a publicly-held multinational technology company.
Fluency and legal drafting skills in English are a prerequisite. Legal drafting skills in a second European language, preferably German or French, is desired.
Desired Qualifications
Strong working knowledge of privacy and data protection regulations, international market expansion issues, contractual law, internet regulation, competition law and intellectual property rights.
Experience with corporate compliance, including competition and anti-corruption policies and practices, and reporting requirements for public companies.
Excellent analytical, negotiation and contract drafting skills applicable to a wide variety of matters from data usage agreements and advertising services agreements to employment agreements to technology licensing agreements. Familiarity with insertion orders and IAB terms and conditions for digital advertising a plus.
Ability to communicate effectively at all levels of organization from senior management to recent college graduates in newly created roles.
Astute commercial awareness and strong business acumen, excellent time management skills, enviable communication and interpersonal skills as well as the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and work seamlessly with a legal team based 8,977 kilometers away.
Demonstrated, efficient, and budget-minded management of external law firms.
Experience with employment matters including benefits and equity programs is a plus.
